Nollywood actress Destiny Etiko has voiced her discontent with the fervor surrounding the latest season of Big Brother Naija (BBNaija), questioning why Nigerians are so engrossed in the show amid widespread economic difficulties.
The ninth season of BBNaija, which premiered on July 28, features 28 housemates in duos and has generated significant buzz despite the prevailing economic hardships. The show, themed “No Loose Guard,” promises a series of dramatic twists over the next 10 weeks.
In a recent Instagram post, Etiko expressed her frustration with the public’s enthusiasm for the reality TV show, highlighting the contrast between the nation’s economic struggles and the excitement generated by the program.
She wrote: “It’s disheartening to see people so invested in BBNaija while our country faces severe economic challenges. People are struggling, and yet, there’s so much joy over a TV show. Is there still enough money for data? If you aren’t complaining, then who am I to?”
Etiko’s comments reflect a broader concern about the disparity between the country’s economic state and the seemingly unrelenting enthusiasm for entertainment. She emphasized that while some individuals manage to get by, many others are still grappling with hardship.
The show’s popularity highlights the escapism it provides for many viewers, offering a temporary distraction from their daily struggles. However, Etiko’s remarks serve as a reminder of the ongoing issues affecting a large segment of the population.
