Controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, is set to be released from Kirikiri Correctional Centre on August 5, 2024. This follows a six-month incarceration for naira abuse, specifically for the act of spraying currency at social events.

A reliable source within the correctional facility and Bobrisky’s lawyer, Ayo Olumofin, confirmed the release date on Tuesday. “Bobrisky will be released on Monday, August 5,” said the source, who requested anonymity. Olumofin, who has represented Bobrisky in court, added, “The release is scheduled, and while I may not be present due to other commitments, other legal representatives might attend.”

Bobrisky was sentenced on April 12, 2024, by Justice Abimbola Awogboro, who has since been promoted to the Court of Appeal. The sentence came after Bobrisky’s conviction on charges of naira abuse, with no option for a fine.

Bobrisky’s appeal against the conviction may not be heard before his release, as the six-month term is set to expire on August 5. The case against him involved multiple counts of currency abuse, including incidents on March 24, 2024, at IMAX Circle Mall in Jakande Lekki, where he was accused of spraying N400,000. He was also charged with similar offenses in July and August 2023 at Ajah Junction, Ikorodu, and in December 2023 at White Steve Event Hall, Ikeja.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detailed how Bobrisky tampered with the naira notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, violating Section 21 (1) of the Central Bank Act 2007. Bobrisky admitted guilt in court and expressed his lack of awareness regarding the naira law during his allocution.

The EFCC had conducted a special operation to monitor instances of currency abuse at events and on social media. Bobrisky’s case was highlighted by videos showing him spraying naira notes at various events.

With his release imminent, Bobrisky’s legal team is preparing for the next steps, while the broader public awaits his return.
