The Nigerian military has issued a warning that it may intervene in the ongoing nationwide hunger protests, known as #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, if incidents of looting and violence continue. Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa made the announcement during a press conference in Abuja on Friday.
General Musa explained that the military is currently supporting the police and monitoring the situation closely. “We are on standby and will step in if the situation escalates beyond the police’s capacity to manage,” he said. He commended the police for their efforts but emphasized that the military is prepared to act if necessary.
Musa acknowledged the protesters’ frustrations with the country’s economic challenges but urged them to approach their grievances constructively. He cautioned against property damage and looting, stressing the need for national unity during these turbulent times.
“The destruction we witnessed on August 1, 2024, was alarming,” Musa noted. “If such behavior continues, it could lead to even greater damage. We cannot allow criminals to exploit these protests to wreak havoc.”
The Chief of Defence Staff reassured the public that the military and other security agencies are committed to maintaining order. He warned that any individuals caught looting or vandalizing property would face legal consequences. The military is also working to identify and address those behind the scenes who may be inciting or sponsoring violence.
“We will act professionally and ensure that those involved in criminal activities are prosecuted,” Musa added. “Our goal is to restore peace and prevent further destruction.”
