The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu for his silence during the ongoing nationwide protests demanding an end to hunger and poor governance. The protests, which began on August 1, 2024, have spread across major cities including Abuja, Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, and Rivers, reflecting widespread frustration over economic hardships.
In a statement issued on Saturday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba called on President Tinubu to address the nation urgently. The PDP emphasized that the president’s lack of response is exacerbating public concern and perceived governmental indifference.
Ologunagba’s statement said, “The PDP demands that President Tinubu immediately address the nation on critical issues such as reducing petroleum prices, stabilizing the Naira, and ensuring adequate food provision. These measures are crucial for revitalizing the economy, creating jobs, and restoring political stability.”
The PDP expressed alarm that the president’s silence might suggest a lack of empathy from the All Progressives Congress (APC) government towards the dire situation faced by citizens. The statement also condemned reports of violence against protesters, allegedly perpetrated by security forces and APC-affiliated groups.
“The continued silence from President Tinubu while Nigerians protest for better governance and basic needs is troubling. The world is watching as security forces and alleged APC supporters target unarmed protesters,” the statement added.
The PDP has also called for a thorough investigation into the alleged killings of protesters by security operatives and urged the government to ensure accountability and professionalism in handling security matters.
Additionally, the party has proposed immediate actions to address economic challenges, including reducing the price of petrol to a maximum of N200 per litre and recovering over N50 trillion reportedly embezzled by APC leaders. The PDP advocates for lowering tariffs on essential goods, cutting the cost of governance, and reallocating funds to directly benefit Nigerians.
The statement concluded with a call for the president to break his silence, address the nation’s pressing issues, and reassure citizens of tangible actions to improve their welfare and economic conditions.
