Renowned Nigerian football icon Emmanuel Amuneke has been officially appointed as the head coach of Heartland FC. The appointment was announced on August 5, 2024, during a ceremony at the Imo State Government House, where Governor Hope Uzodinma expressed confidence in Amuneke’s ability to lead the team back to its former glory .

Amuneke, who has had an illustrious career both as a player and coach, is no stranger to high expectations. As a former Super Eagles star and the 1994 African Footballer of the Year, he brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record to Heartland FC. His coaching resume includes leading Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets to victory at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup and managing the Tanzanian national team, whom he guided to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after a 39-year absence.

Heartland FC, which was relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) last season, is looking to Amuneke to steer them back to the top tier of Nigerian football. Speaking at his unveiling, Amuneke stated, “My immediate task is to help Heartland secure promotion to the NPFL. The team has immense potential, and with hard work and dedication, we can achieve great things” .
