The Kogi State Police Command has detained three individuals suspected of impersonating the wife of the state governor, Sefinat Usman-Ododo, to defraud unsuspecting residents. The suspects, whose names have been withheld, were apprehended by the Police Quick Response Unit.
SP Williams Ovye-Aya, the command’s spokesman, confirmed the arrests on Tuesday. He explained that the suspects had printed and sold forms under the guise of an empowerment program allegedly endorsed by the First Lady. The forms were branded with the name “Kogi State Cooperative Federation of Nigeria” and were sold to the public with promises of enrollment into the fictitious program.
The arrests were made in Lokoja when an undercover agent approached the suspects and purchased one of the fraudulent forms. “The matter is under investigation, and once concluded, we shall prosecute them accordingly,” Ovye-Aya stated.
The police spokesman emphasized that the suspects exploited the name and office of the First Lady to deceive and defraud their victims, further adding that the investigation is ongoing.
