A heated controversy has erupted in Imo State as the Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW) has called on the government and security agencies to intervene and halt a controversial church event scheduled for August 30, 2024. The event, titled “That Witch Must Die,” is organized by the Mercy and Power Deliverance Ministry in Mbieri, Mbaitoli Local Government Area, and led by Apostle Dr. Angel, popularly known as “Owomowomo Fire.”
The advocacy group has raised alarms over the event, expressing fears that it could incite witch hunts and lead to violence against individuals accused of witchcraft. Billboards promoting the event have already been placed across various parts of Imo State, including the capital, Owerri. The group’s director, Dr. Leo Igwe, emphasized that while freedom of religion is a protected right, it should not be used to justify incitement to violence or murder. He noted that witchcraft accusations are illegal under Nigerian law, and those found guilty can face imprisonment.
AfAW has warned that similar events in the past have led to horrific outcomes, with individuals being attacked, tortured, or killed based on unfounded accusations of witchcraft. The group urged the police, the State Security Service, and the National Human Rights Commission to act swiftly to prevent the event from taking place, thereby safeguarding lives and ensuring that Imo State does not become a hotspot for witch-hunting activities​.
