Prominent activist lawyer, Madubuachi Idam, has called on the National Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Bola Tinubu, citing the recent purchase of a new presidential jet as grounds for action. Idam argued that the failure to seek legislative approval for the acquisition of the jet demonstrates a blatant disregard for Nigeria’s economic challenges and constitutes a “reckless abuse of scarce public funds.”

In a letter to the National Assembly, Idam emphasized that Tinubu’s actions reflect a lack of empathy for the struggling Nigerian populace. “Mr. President has no pity for Nigeria’s ailing economy, which has conditioned the average citizen to a life of struggle for survival,” Idam stated. He further accused the Tinubu administration of prioritizing luxury and comfort over the needs of ordinary Nigerians.

Despite public criticism, Tinubu’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the purchase, asserting that the jet was acquired below market value, purportedly saving the nation billions in maintenance and fuel costs. However, Idam remains unconvinced, arguing that the transaction is symptomatic of a broader pattern of wasteful expenditure under the current administration.

Idam also highlighted that the Senate President had recently dismissed rumors of a new jet purchase, making the actual acquisition even more troubling. He called on the National Assembly to exercise its constitutional powers under Section 143 of the 1999 Constitution to address what he described as “continued needless spending.”

The activist lawyer’s stance has added fuel to the ongoing debate over the president’s spending priorities, as Nigeria grapples with significant economic challenges.
