The Nigeria Police Force detained 97 members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as the Shi’ite group, following a violent clash in Abuja that resulted in the deaths of two police officers and left three others seriously injured. The confrontation escalated when the Shi’ites set ablaze three police patrol vehicles, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
The police have vowed to bring all involved in the attack to justice. According to Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the arrests were made based on credible intelligence reports, and investigations are ongoing to track down additional suspects. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed his determination to prevent any form of anarchy, stating that the force will not tolerate such violence against its officers.
The IGP emphasized that the killing of police officers in the line of duty is unacceptable and equates to an attack on peace itself. He also extended condolences to the families of the fallen officers and assured them of his commitment to ensuring that those responsible face the full wrath of the law. The IGP also reassured the public of the police’s resolve to maintain law and order across the country, even in the face of extremist threats.
The clash between the police and the Shi’ite group marks another chapter in the ongoing tension between the government and the proscribed organization.
