Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has announced that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will adopt a consensus approach to select its chairmanship and councillorship candidates for the upcoming September 21 local government election. The decision was made during a meeting with aspirants and stakeholders at the APC secretariat in Owerri on Tuesday.
Governor Uzodimma emphasized that the consensus method was chosen to foster unity and cohesion within the party, especially given the high number of aspirants. “We have over 800 aspirants for councillorship positions and over 200 for chairmanship,” the governor noted. “Our first option will be consensus, but if it’s difficult to reach an agreement, we will resort to either direct or indirect primaries.”
The governor assured party members that the APC Constitution provides three methods for candidate selection: direct primaries, indirect primaries, and consensus. He stressed the importance of evaluating the specific needs and circumstances of each local government area when making these decisions.
Uzodimma also congratulated the party on its recent victory at the Supreme Court, which he said has cleared the way for the smooth conduct of the local council elections. He acknowledged the security challenges that had previously made the election seem uncertain but expressed confidence in the current stability.
In his remarks, the APC State Chairman, MacDonald Ebere, praised Governor Uzodimma for his leadership and commitment to ensuring the party’s success in the forthcoming elections.
