The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a strong demand for the immediate reversal of the recent hike in petrol prices across the country. This follows the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)’s decision to increase the official price of fuel from N617 to N897 per litre, a move that has sparked outrage among Nigerians.

In a post shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) page on Tuesday night, the NLC called for swift action, stating, “We demand the immediate reversal of the latest increase in the pump price of PMS across the country.”

The union’s President, Joe Ajaero, expressed frustration and disappointment with the government, claiming that President Bola Tinubu’s administration had gone back on an earlier understanding. Ajaero explained that the NLC had agreed to a N70,000 minimum wage under the belief that there would be no further increases in fuel prices.

“The government’s actions are a betrayal of the trust we had during negotiations,” Ajaero said, adding that the union would not stand by idly. He further warned that in the coming days, the NLC’s decision-making bodies would convene to deliberate on the next steps, hinting at potential industrial action if the price hike is not reversed.

The NLC’s firm stance underscores the growing frustration among Nigerians, who have been grappling with the economic impact of rising fuel costs. As the government and labor unions prepare for further confrontations, all eyes will be on the upcoming decisions from both sides.
