Nigeria and China have signed several groundbreaking Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Beijing, solidifying their strategic partnership. The agreements, finalized in the presence of President Tinubu and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, encompass cooperation in the Belt and Road Initiative, nuclear energy, human resource development, and media exchange.
The signing of these MoUs comes just ahead of the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), where President Tinubu will represent Nigeria from September 4-6, 2024.
Ajuri Ngelale, the presidential spokesperson, highlighted key areas of cooperation between the two nations, including:
- Cooperation on the Belt and Road Initiative
- Peaceful application of nuclear energy
- Human resource development under the Global Development Initiative
- Media exchange between China Media Group and the Nigerian Television Authority
President Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s economic potential, noting its status as Africa’s largest economy and population. He pointed out that Nigeria’s youthful demographic could serve as a catalyst for economic growth and cross-sectoral trade opportunities.
“We are committed to economic reforms, following the successful example set by President Xi Jinping in China,” Tinubu stated.
Meanwhile, President Xi Jinping lauded the enduring diplomatic relationship between the two countries, which has spanned over 50 years, and reaffirmed their mutual goal of enhancing strategic coordination to boost China-Africa relations.
Both leaders believe that these MoUs pave the way for deeper collaboration, reinforcing the partnership between Nigeria and China, and contributing to global progress, especially among developing nations in the Global South.
