Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in the 2023 Imo State election, Senator Athan Achonu, has expressed dissatisfaction with the recent Supreme Court judgment that upheld Governor Hope Uzodinma’s victory. Speaking at a press conference in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area, Achonu criticized both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary for what he described as a degradation of Nigeria’s electoral process.
Achonu voiced his concerns over the Supreme Court’s ruling, which dismissed appeals from both the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Samuel Anyanwu and himself. He stressed that the Labour Party would provide strong opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
“The sanctity of our election process has been greatly debased,” Achonu lamented, accusing INEC of failing in its duty to conduct free and fair elections.
He also took the opportunity to appeal for peace, urging those involved in acts of insecurity within the state to reconsider and allow tranquility to prevail.
The five-member panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Mohammed Idris, dismissed Achonu’s appeal, citing that neither he nor the PDP candidate had provided sufficient evidence to challenge the election results.
