President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the establishment of a disaster relief fund aimed at supporting Nigerians affected by floods and other natural disasters. The president made this declaration during his visit to Maiduguri, Borno State, on Monday, where he sympathized with residents impacted by the recent Alau Dam flooding.

During his visit, Tinubu urged the private sector to contribute to the relief fund, stressing the urgent need for such a measure as the nation faces unpredictable climate challenges. “There must be a disaster relief fund. I will invite the private sector to team up with us and help rebuild the affected areas,” Tinubu said during a meeting at the Borno Government House.

He further proposed allocating a small percentage from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) towards the relief efforts to ensure swift and effective interventions in disaster-prone areas.

The president’s visit to Borno included a stop at an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp and the Shehu of Borno’s palace, where he pledged continued government support for the flood-affected regions. He also praised the efforts of Governor Babagana Zulum and federal agencies, particularly the Nigerian military, for their quick response in evacuating victims.

Tinubu extended his sympathies to residents of Yobe State and other regions affected by floods, assuring that his administration will introduce comprehensive measures to prevent future disasters and aid recovery efforts across the nation.
