The Presidency has dismissed reports claiming that President Bola Tinubu asked Yemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to resign from his position. In a statement released on Tuesday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the allegations as false and baseless.
The rumors, which circulated ahead of Tinubu’s departure for China, suggested that influential Yoruba leaders had intervened to keep Cardoso in office despite alleged dissatisfaction with his handling of the country’s economic challenges. However, Onanuga took to his official X account (formerly Twitter) to categorically deny the claims.
“It’s all lies. President Tinubu has not asked Yemi Cardoso to resign,” Onanuga stated, putting an end to speculation about the CBN governor’s future.
Cardoso, who has faced criticism for his perceived inability to stabilize the Naira amidst Nigeria’s ongoing economic difficulties, remains in office with full backing from the presidency. This statement comes as the government continues its efforts to address the nation’s financial issues.
The rumor, now debunked, had caused a stir within political circles, but the presidency’s clarification signals that Cardoso will continue his duties as Governor of the Central Bank without disruption.
