Nigerian politician and human rights activist, Shehu Sani, has called for a higher monthly stipend of N100,000 for female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, citing the unique challenges they face. This comes in response to the recent increase in NYSC allowances to N77,000, as approved by the Bola Tinubu-led administration.
In a post shared on Thursday, Sani applauded the increase but argued that female Corps members deserve more due to the additional difficulties they encounter. “The increase in the allowance of Youth Corpers to 77k is commendable. But those of the Female Corpers should have been jerked up to 100k since they suffer more,” Sani wrote on his social media platform.
Sani’s advocacy highlights the need for more equitable treatment and support for female Corps members, underscoring the importance of recognizing their unique experiences and hardships during their service year. He stressed that female participants in the program face greater financial and social challenges, which justify the higher stipend.
As a former senator and chairman of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Sani has long been a vocal advocate for social justice and human rights. His call for increased stipends reflects his ongoing commitment to promoting fairness and ensuring vulnerable groups, particularly women, receive the support they need.
While some may express concerns about inflation with rising wages, Sani’s stance emphasizes the necessity of providing a living wage for workers, particularly in a country where the cost of living continues to escalate.
