The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of more than eight suspects in connection with the recent attack and burning of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) study centre located in Eze Oke Nsu, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area, Imo State. The incident occurred last Tuesday.
This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state, Henry Okoye, during a press briefing in Owerri on Wednesday. Okoye stated that investigations are ongoing and assured the public that more information would be provided as the inquiry progresses.
“I am pleased to announce that over eight suspects have been arrested in connection with the arson incidents in Ehime Mbano. Investigations are ongoing. More details will be communicated in due course,” Okoye said.
The attack is believed to have been fueled by rumors circulating in the state that the NOUN study centre would be used to house Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), which led to rising tensions and fears of further attacks in the affected community.
Community leaders have expressed concerns over the situation and called for increased security. One of the local leaders, who chose to remain anonymous, advised security agencies to set up checkpoints to prevent further incidents. Another community leader stressed the need for security forces to collaborate with local vigilantes to ensure the safety of the area.
The residents of Ehime Mbano and neighboring communities remain on high alert, with security agencies working to maintain peace and order in the region.
