Two police officers attached to the Anambra State Command lost their lives on Thursday morning after a deadly encounter with armed hoodlums in Nnewi, Anambra State. The tragic incident occurred during a gun duel between the operatives and the assailants, who launched an improvised explosive device (IED) at the officers, causing a fatal explosion.

The officers were on an investigative mission in Uruagu, Nnewi North, when they were ambushed by the attackers. According to reports, the hoodlums opened fire on sighting the police officers and tossed the explosive device into their operational vehicle, killing two officers and setting the vehicle ablaze.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the attack. The spokesperson for the Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that a manhunt for the assailants is currently underway, and urged residents, especially eyewitnesses, to assist the police with any useful information.

“Joint Security Force has begun a manhunt operation on the armed men who murdered two police operatives during investigation activities this morning at Uruagu, Nnewi North. Preliminary information reveals that the attackers fired sporadically and threw an improvised explosive device into the police vehicle, resulting in the tragic deaths of two officers,” Ikenga said.

He further encouraged the public to provide information to aid in the ongoing investigation, assuring that all information shared would be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
