The late Herbert Wigwe, co-founder and former CEO of Access Bank Plc, was recently immortalized by the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID) at Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State. The center, under the leadership of Christian Happi, unveiled a memorial fountain and garden in Wigwe’s name, honouring his contributions to humanity.
The event was attended by notable personalities, including Aliko Dangote, Chairman and CEO of Dangote Group; Chizoma Okoli, Group Deputy Managing Director of Access Bank; and Teslim Igbalaye, Secretary to the Osun State Government, who represented Governor Ademola Adeleke. Wigwe’s siblings, Emeka and Peggy, were also present, with Emeka overcome with emotion as he paid tribute to his late brother.
The memorial, bearing the inscription, “The memorial stands in memory of Dr. Herbert O. Wigwe, a silent, steadfast and strong supporter of ACEGID. It also serves as a continuous reflection of his selfless service for the benefit of humanity,” was unveiled as a tribute to Wigwe’s enduring legacy.
Aliko Dangote praised Wigwe’s contributions, stating, “Herbert was great in life and contributed immensely to humanity. We are here today to immortalize him and reflect on the good he did while alive. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
Dangote also commended Happi for initiating the memorial to honour the late banker, ensuring that Wigwe’s legacy lives on.
