Former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has shed light on his complex relationship with the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, during a recent interview. While reluctant to mention Wike by name, Amaechi highlighted how Wike once served as his Chief of Staff when he was governor between 2007 and 2015.
Amaechi, who also served as Minister of Transportation, emphasized his pivotal role in shaping the political careers of many prominent figures in Rivers State, asserting, “Name any Rivers politician that didn’t pass through me.” He reflected on his early political career, recalling his loyalty to the Rufus George camp, which he described as poor but characterized by integrity and strong values—a contrast to more affluent political camps at the time.
Despite the strained relationship between Amaechi and Wike, both key figures in Nigeria’s political landscape, Amaechi credited his journey in politics to his commitment to character and honesty, values he insists are lacking in many of today’s politicians.
