The Nigerian Senate has called on the Libyan government to issue a formal apology following the mistreatment of the Super Eagles during their trip for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. The team, including 22 players, technical staff, and NFF officials, was forced to endure a 14-hour delay at a smaller airport after their aircraft was diverted.
During a plenary session on Tuesday, Senator Sumaila Kawu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, raised a point of order to address the incident, which he described as a “shameful display of disrespect for human dignity and international norms.” The Senate has also requested a comprehensive investigation into the matter, demanding an explanation from Libyan authorities.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin condemned the treatment of the Super Eagles, emphasizing that such actions violate the spirit of sports, which is intended to foster unity and brotherhood among nations. The Senate urged Libya to correct the situation and formally apologize to Nigeria, while also encouraging diplomatic channels to resolve the issue peacefully.
