The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has suspended popular actress Halima Abubakar indefinitely, citing professional misconduct involving the spread of false information and slander against fellow actors and prominent individuals. The Guild revealed that Abubakar had been under secret investigation for two years, with findings confirming her involvement in damaging the reputation of colleagues and influential figures in the industry.

In a statement released on Friday, the AGN disclosed that the decision followed a thorough report by a Special Secret Investigation Panel established in 2022. The panel was tasked with looking into rumors and slanderous reports linked to several Nollywood figures, with Abubakar identified as a key player behind the allegations.

The Guild stated: “Miss Halima Abubakar has been found guilty of disseminating false information about her colleagues, associates, and highly placed patrons, including unverified claims of extramarital affairs. Based on the findings of the investigation panel, the Guild has placed her on indefinite suspension.”

In addition to the suspension, Abubakar will face the AGN National Disciplinary Committee to determine the full extent of her punishment. She is also barred from participating in any AGN-related activities, including future film projects, during the suspension.

The AGN also revealed that other female members are under investigation by the secret panel, particularly regarding the recent release of names of individuals allegedly connected to Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. The Guild warned that these individuals are being closely monitored, and further actions may follow pending the conclusion of the investigations.

This suspension marks a significant moment for the AGN, as it continues to tackle the growing concerns over unverified claims and the reputational damage that some actors may cause within the industry. AGN President Emeka Rollas has repeatedly emphasized the Guild’s commitment to professionalism, and this suspension underscores the Guild’s stance against misconduct.

Halima Abubakar has been a prominent figure in Nollywood, known for her roles in a range of films over the years. However, her recent involvement in controversies related to slander and unfounded claims has raised concerns within the industry, prompting the AGN’s decisive action.

The ongoing investigation and potential repercussions for other Nollywood figures signal a broader effort by the AGN to ensure accountability and uphold the integrity of the entertainment industry.
