The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a lawmaker from Abia State, following allegations of physical assault on a cab driver, Stephen Abuwatseya. The arrest comes in response to public outrage after a viral video showed Ikwechegh allegedly slapping Abuwatseya during a dispute over a package delivery to the lawmaker’s Maitama residence.
Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the Abuja Police Command, revealed that Ikwechegh is currently undergoing questioning at the Maitama Police Station. According to Adeh, preliminary investigations show that Abuwatseya had arrived to deliver a package when an argument ensued, ultimately leading to the alleged assault.
The incident has sparked widespread criticism of Ikwechegh’s alleged disregard for law enforcement, particularly after he reportedly taunted Abuwatseya to “call the Inspector General of Police” following the assault. This dismissive remark, coupled with the video evidence, has intensified calls for justice, leading the FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, to mandate a comprehensive and impartial investigation.
“The FCT Police Command is gravely concerned over Hon. Ikwechegh’s attitude toward law enforcement and is fully committed to conducting an unbiased investigation,” Adeh stated. “Upon the investigation’s conclusion, appropriate legal measures will be taken.”
The incident has reignited discussions on the abuse of power by public officials and prompted demands for accountability. Many have taken to social media, emphasizing the need for law enforcement to stand firm against intimidation and ensure justice is served, regardless of status.
