In response to the recent violent assaults on vigilante groups in Anambra State, Senator Tony Nwoye, representing Anambra North Senatorial District, has issued a strong condemnation of the attacks that resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.

On Monday, November 18, 2024, armed assailants targeted vigilante units in Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area, and Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area. The coordinated attacks led to the deaths of four vigilante members and left seven others injured. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen, chanting “No Biafra, No Freedom,” fired indiscriminately, causing panic among residents.

Senator Nwoye described the attacks as “senseless” and a “cowardly attempt to instill fear and chaos in our communities.” He emphasized that such violence only perpetuates suffering and does not contribute to resolving underlying issues.

Addressing the broader context of regional unrest, Nwoye urged Southeast governors, leaders, and stakeholders to unite in sending a strong delegation to President Bola Tinubu to negotiate a peaceful resolution for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. He stressed that collective engagement and dialogue are crucial in restoring sanity and order to the region.

Expressing solidarity with the affected communities, Nwoye extended his condolences to the families of the victims and pledged his support during this difficult time. He called for collaborative efforts to find peaceful solutions, emphasizing the need to foster a culture of understanding and cooperation for the sake of current and future generations.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incidents and initiated investigations. Governor Chukwuma Soludo recently ordered all markets in the state to open and not to obey any sit-at-home orders issued by unauthorized groups, a directive that traders in Ukpo had complied with prior to the attacks.
