President Bola Tinubu has endorsed the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative led by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, during the 19th G20 Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro. This alliance aims to unite governments, international organizations, and civil society to combat hunger and poverty worldwide.
In his address, President Tinubu highlighted the alliance’s significance in addressing global challenges and emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to adopting international best practices for economic development. He stated that Nigeria’s endorsement of the alliance aligns with its efforts to tackle hunger and poverty through international cooperation and resources.
President Tinubu also called for reforms in the United Nations Security Council to better reflect global diversity, advocating for the inclusion of African nations as permanent members. He reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to represent Africa in this capacity.
Addressing global taxation, President Tinubu criticized the current international tax system for disadvantaging developing countries, particularly in taxing digital economies. He noted that this imbalance leads to significant revenue losses, hindering sustainable development and economic self-reliance. Nigeria, alongside other African nations, has called for a framework convention on tax to establish a more equitable global tax system.
The G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro has brought together world leaders to discuss pressing global issues, including conflicts, climate change, and economic policies. The launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty marks a significant step in addressing these challenges through collaborative efforts.
