Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has downplayed Wilfred Ndidi’s controversial tackle on Cole Palmer during Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday. Despite outrage from Chelsea fans over the challenge, Maresca, who previously coached Ndidi at Leicester, insisted it was not a red-card offense.
Ndidi’s tackle, which occurred in the 22nd minute, saw the Leicester City midfielder clip Palmer from behind, making contact with the back of his ankle. The incident sparked heated debates among fans, with many demanding stricter punishment.
Speaking in his post-match interview, Maresca defended Ndidi, emphasizing his belief that the foul was not intentional. “I don’t think Cole was the target. I’m not saying Wilf was bad-intentioned because I love Wilf,” Maresca stated. “When there is bad intention, the punishment has to be different, but I don’t think this was a red.”
Chelsea’s goals came courtesy of Nicolas Jackson and Enzo Fernandez, who secured an important win for the Blues. The incident, however, dominated post-match discussions, with comparisons drawn to other recent tackles that resulted in red cards.
Maresca also pointed out his consistent approach to officiating decisions, referencing a previous red card incident against Manchester United. “I saw the clip, and I don’t think it’s a red, to be honest,” he said, contrasting it with his earlier criticism of a red card in the United game.
