The Nigeria Police Force has transferred musician Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington or “Akpi,” from Owerri, Imo State, to Abuja amidst allegations of intensified punitive measures.
Sources revealed that Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Dasuki Galadanchi, in charge of the Force Intelligence Department (FID), personally took over the case, citing dissatisfaction with the brevity of Darlington’s earlier detention.
“Speed Darlington is being moved to Abuja for further action under the direct supervision of DIG Galadanchi,” a source disclosed, adding that the musician’s previous bail was deemed “too short” to serve as adequate punishment.
This transfer follows Tuesday’s arrest of Darlington during his performance in Owerri, reportedly triggered by a cyberstalking petition filed by Afrobeat star Burna Boy.
Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju, representing Darlington, accused Burna Boy of weaponizing the police against his client. “Burna Boy, who sings against oppression, has now turned into an oppressor,” Adeyanju said.
