Premier League referee David Coote has been dismissed from his role following the emergence of a video in which he made derogatory remarks about former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. The 42-year-old official was suspended last month after the controversial footage circulated on social media.

In the video, Coote allegedly called Klopp “arrogant” and used offensive language, referencing a 2020 match between Liverpool and Burnley, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Klopp had criticized Coote’s officiating after the game, accusing him of being overly lenient with Burnley’s challenges.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) announced Coote’s termination on Monday, stating, “David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable.”

Adding to the controversy, Coote is facing UEFA disciplinary proceedings over another video allegedly showing him snorting a white powder during Euro 2024. The Football Association is also investigating claims that Coote discussed betting on issuing a yellow card with a fan before an English Championship match.

Coote’s final Premier League assignment was Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on November 9. Despite his dismissal, PGMOL affirmed its commitment to supporting Coote’s welfare during this challenging period.

The scandal has cast a shadow over officiating standards and ethics in professional football, prompting calls for stricter oversight and accountability for referees.
