The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre) has emphasized the vital role of Nigerian youths in combating corruption while advocating for the creation of an International Anti-Corruption Court. This call was made during a conference held on Monday to mark the 2024 Anti-Corruption Day.
HEDA Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, highlighted the urgency of engaging young people in the anti-corruption crusade, stressing their potential as catalysts for change. Suraju pointed to the persistence of corruption and the need for civil society, media, and citizens to ensure stolen funds are reclaimed and redirected towards public services.
“We are recruiting a new vanguard, especially among the youth, to expose and condemn acts of corruption,” Suraju said.
Mrs. Funmi Falana (SAN) underscored the importance of involving young Nigerians in the fight against corruption, describing them as resilient and crucial to the nation’s future. She also called for the establishment of an International Anti-Corruption Court to prosecute high-profile cases and repatriate stolen funds.
Justice Mojisola Olatoregun (rtd) warned that corruption erodes trust between citizens and leaders, urging youths to leverage their numbers and creativity as agents of change.
The event also featured the launch of the Compendium of 100 High Profile Corruption Cases in Nigeria, a resource highlighting corruption’s damaging impact and the need for accountability.
