Workers of the Ondo State Internal Revenue Service (ODIRS) staged a protest on Thursday over the non-payment of the new minimum wage, despite prior assurances by the state government. The aggrieved staff, who gathered at the revenue house and barricaded access roads, expressed frustration that they were still receiving the old salary while other civil servants in the state had begun earning the new wage.
The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions, decrying the disparity between the substantial allowances of top executives and the meager earnings of junior staff. They accused the management of failing to address their grievances despite multiple engagements and vowed to sustain the protest until their demands are met.
According to the workers, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had pledged to implement the minimum wage for all civil servants ahead of last month’s election, a promise they claim has not been extended to ODIRS staff.
Addressing the issue, the special adviser to the governor on union matters, Bola Taiwo, described the protest as a minor disagreement and assured that the state government was committed to resolving the matter promptly.
