The Federal Capital Territory High Court has granted bail to former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in the sum of N500 million with three sureties in like sum, following his arraignment on a 16-count charge of alleged money laundering involving N110 billion. Justice Maryann Anenih delivered the ruling on Thursday, ordering that the sureties must be notable Nigerians with landed property in Abuja’s Maitama, Jabi, Utako, Apo, Guzape, Garki, or Asokoro districts.

The bail ruling comes days after the court initially rejected Bello’s bail application, describing it as premature since the defendant was not in custody at the time. However, his legal team, led by Joseph Daudu, SAN, refiled the application and reached a mutual understanding with the prosecution to expedite the trial process.

During the proceedings, Daudu requested that the court broaden the scope of properties acceptable for bail sureties and highlighted the defence team’s willingness to ensure a smooth trial. The prosecution, represented by Olukayode Enitan, SAN, confirmed ongoing discussions with the defence and left the bail decision to the court’s discretion.

Justice Anenih ruled that Bello must deposit his international passport and other travel documents with the court. Until all bail conditions are met, the former governor is to remain in Kuje Correctional Centre.

This high-profile case, brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to address financial crimes and strengthen accountability among public officials.
