Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi has been granted bail by a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ado Ekiti, following his earlier remand over allegations of defaming legal luminary and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), Afe Babalola.
The court, presided over by Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun, approved the bail on Wednesday, December 20, setting the terms at ₦30 million and ensuring the provision of sureties. Farotimi, who had been held at a correctional facility in Ado Ekiti, arrived at the court under tight security, drawing cheers from supporters gathered outside.
A viral video captured the dramatic moment as Farotimi stepped out of the prison van with his hands raised in gratitude. The activist, charged with 14 counts by the Ekiti State Police, has pleaded not guilty, with his legal team insisting that the charges lack merit.
Lead counsel Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika argued that the defamation charges are inconsistent with the Ekiti State Criminal Law of 2021, asserting that such an offense is not legally recognized under the state’s framework.
The case, which has sparked widespread interest, highlights ongoing debates about the boundaries of free speech and the legal limits of defamation in Nigeria. Farotimi’s bail is seen as a significant development in the high-profile legal battle, with further proceedings anticipated in the coming weeks.
