The Old Boys Association of Government College Kaduna (KADOBA) has urged Governor Uba Sani to relocate the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp from the school premises, citing its detrimental impact on students’ education and the institution’s infrastructure.
At a press conference marking the 20th anniversary of the Class of 2004’s graduation, alumni expressed concern over the declining state of the school. They pointed to severe shortages of classrooms, dormitories, and vital facilities caused by the conversion of parts of the college into NYSC and civil defense training camps.
Chairman of KADOBA (Class of 2004), Engr. AbdurRahman Musa, acknowledged the security challenges that initially led to the camp’s relocation to the school but argued that the improved security situation under Governor Sani’s leadership now provides an opportunity to return the corps members to their permanent site along the Kaduna-Abuja road.
“We recognize Governor Sani’s commitment to security and education. However, students are being deprived of essential learning facilities due to this arrangement. It is time to prioritize their education by restoring the school’s facilities,” Musa stated during the event at the school’s Abakpa campus.
KADOBA’s National President, Yusuf Muhammad, lamented the dwindling student population, noting that the school, once a prestigious institution producing prominent leaders, now has fewer than 300 students across all classes. He highlighted how 70–80% of the school’s facilities have been repurposed, leaving students in a dire learning environment.
Muhammad emphasized the psychological impact on students and the decline in the school’s enrollment as critical concerns. “Government College Kaduna was a beacon of excellence, but its current state is alarming. Governor Sani must act decisively to restore this historic institution,” he added.
The association commended the governor’s strides in enhancing security and appealed to his sense of duty to education. They expressed confidence in his leadership to relocate the camp and reclaim the school’s lost glory.
