Nigeria’s National Assembly has criticized the effectiveness of the country’s border closure policy, citing rampant cross-border banditry and smuggling in states bordering Niger and Chad.
During the 2025 budget defense session with the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Senator Francis Adenigba Fadaunsi (PDP Osun East) and other lawmakers labeled the closure a failure, claiming it worsens insecurity and economic challenges.
Fadaunsi highlighted that while local rice producers only meet 3 million tons of the national 7 million tons consumption demand, the shortfall is being filled by smugglers.
Hon. Fatima Talba (Yobe State) added that borders remain practically open due to unchecked movement of people and criminals. Similarly, Hon. Paul Kalejaiye (Lagos State) questioned the selective implementation of the closure, urging clarity on the policy.
The committee has tasked Minister Dr. Jumoke Oduwole to consult the presidency for a reassessment of the policy.
