The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has publicly expressed his unwillingness to assist President Bola Tinubu’s administration in addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges. Speaking at the 21st anniversary of Fawehinmiism in Lagos on January 15, 2025, Sanusi criticized the government’s economic policies and its failure to provide credible explanations to the public.

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria described the current economic situation as predictable and potentially avoidable but stated that he has deliberately chosen not to offer insights or solutions. “If I speak, it is going to help the government, and I don’t want to help this government,” Sanusi remarked.

Sanusi explained his frustration with the administration’s conduct, emphasizing that officials must take responsibility for their decisions and communicate effectively with Nigerians. He accused the government of lacking credible representatives to articulate and justify its economic policies.

“They don’t even have people with credibility who can come and explain what they are doing,” Sanusi said. “Let them come and explain to Nigerians why the policies that are being pursued are being pursued.”

Despite his criticism, Sanusi reiterated his commitment to national development but emphasized that accountability and transparency must come from those in leadership positions. His comments have sparked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians debating his decision to withhold potential solutions during a critical economic period.

The Emir’s remarks highlight the growing tensions between government policies and public trust as the country grapples with economic hardship.
