Former President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that he sustains himself financially through rental income from one of his two houses in Kaduna State, emphasizing his commitment to transparency and accountability throughout his presidency. Buhari made this revelation on Saturday, January 25, 2025, during an All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus meeting held at the Presidential Banquet Hall in Katsina State.
Speaking in Hausa, Buhari stressed that he did not corruptly enrich himself while in office, reiterating that Nigeria’s complexity makes governance a monumental challenge. Reflecting on his tenure, the former president highlighted that he owns only three houses—in Daura, Katsina, and Kaduna—one of which is rented out to provide income for his daily needs.
“Nigeria is a difficult country to govern, but most Nigerians are unaware of the administrative challenges. Many simply blame their leaders during and after their tenure,” Buhari stated. He added, “After eight years as a civilian president, I have only three houses: one in Daura and two in Kaduna. I have given one out for renting, and that’s where I get money for feeding.”
Buhari also expressed satisfaction with his improved health and appearance since leaving office. “Anybody that sees me now acknowledges that I look better than before. The pressures of governing this complex nation are behind me,” he remarked.
The former president used the occasion to urge current and future leaders to prioritize transparency, accountability, and service to the nation while in office. He observed that leadership positions often come with immense responsibilities that many do not fully grasp until they are at the helm of affairs.
The APC meeting, convened ahead of the forthcoming local government elections in Katsina, saw Buhari engaging party stakeholders and reflecting on his time in office. His candid remarks have sparked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians debating his claims of modesty and the challenges of leadership in the country.
