The Anambra State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the killing of a yet-to-be-identified man who was gunned down by assailants along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway. The attackers, reportedly driving a Toyota Sienna, trailed and shot the victim in the stomach before fleeing the scene, leaving his lifeless body behind.
Eyewitnesses who spoke on the incident revealed that the shooting occurred in a coordinated attack, raising concerns over rising insecurity in the area. “The gunmen abandoned his body and sped off after ensuring he was dead,” a source recounted.
Police operatives from Ozubulu Divisional Headquarters were alerted and arrived at the scene the following day to recover the corpse.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that officers responded to a distress call in the early hours of January 23, 2025.
“A spot observation by the police responding team and eyewitness accounts confirmed that the victim was shot in the stomach. His body was later recovered along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway,” Ikenga said in a statement on Tuesday.
The command has urged members of the public to assist in identifying the deceased and provide any useful information that could aid the ongoing investigation.
The victim’s remains have been deposited at the morgue as police intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible. Authorities have also assured residents of increased security measures to prevent similar attacks in the future.
