Tensions are escalating between Canada and the United States after President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, sparking strong opposition from Mark Carney, the frontrunner for Canada’s Prime Ministerial race.

Carney, speaking on BBC Newsnight, declared that Canada will not back down, warning that his country will take retaliatory action.

“President Trump probably thinks Canada will cave in. But we are going to stand up to a bully. We will not back down. We are united and we will retaliate,” Carney stated.

The tariff hike, which also impacts Mexico (25%) and China (10%), took effect on Saturday, February 1, 2025, following an announcement from the White House on Friday.

Carney criticized Trump’s trade stance, stating that these tariffs will damage the U.S.’s global reputation, increase inflation, and slow down economic growth. He also accused Trump of “ripping up a trade agreement with its closest trading partner for the second time in less than a decade.”

The tariffs come despite the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced NAFTA in 2020 and was meant to stabilize trade relations between the three nations. However, Trump’s latest move has rekindled economic hostilities, with Canada now preparing a countermeasure.
