Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for greater transparency and accountability following President Bola Tinubu’s recent proposal to increase Nigeria’s 2025 budget from ₦49.7 trillion to ₦54.2 trillion. Obi emphasized the need for a detailed breakdown of expenditures to justify the budget’s expansion.

In a statement released on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi acknowledged the government’s disclosure of additional revenues—₦1.4 trillion from the Federal Inland Revenue Service, ₦1.2 trillion from the Nigeria Customs Service, and ₦1.8 trillion from other agencies—but noted the absence of corresponding expenditure details. He stressed that Nigerians deserve to know how these resources are allocated to ensure they are judiciously spent on the country’s development and citizens’ well-being.

Obi urged that the increased budget should prioritize critical sectors such as education, healthcare, security, and poverty alleviation. He also called upon the National Assembly to make public the full details of the 2024 budget, emphasizing that transparency in this regard is crucial for ensuring accountability, learning from past budgets, and making informed decisions for the nation’s progress.
