In a harrowing case that has shocked the Darlington community, 38-year-old Christopher Stockton has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years for the brutal murder of his partner’s 22-month-old son, Charlie Roberts. The sentencing took place on February 7, 2025, at Teesside Crown Court.
On January 12, 2024, while Charlie’s mother, Paula Roberts, attended an eye appointment, Stockton was entrusted with the toddler’s care. Within 20 minutes, he called emergency services, claiming that Charlie had choked on a biscuit. However, medical examinations revealed that the child had suffered catastrophic head injuries consistent with severe shaking or being thrown. Charlie succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Further investigations uncovered a disturbing pattern of abuse. Detectives found multiple photographs on Paula Roberts’ phone showing Charlie with various bruises and injuries. Despite expressing intentions to seek medical help in text messages, she failed to do so. Roberts, 41, pleaded guilty to child neglect and was sentenced to four years in prison.
During sentencing, Justice James Goss addressed Stockton, stating, “You have robbed his family of the joy of bringing up a child and of sharing life events with him. No court can undo the harm you have caused.” He also admonished Roberts for “turning a blind eye to what you must have known was the reality of the situation,” emphasizing her role in the prolonged neglect.
This tragic case underscores the critical importance of vigilance and timely intervention in suspected child abuse situations. The community mourns the loss of young Charlie Roberts, whose life was cut short by those entrusted with his care.
