Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has lashed out at Nigeria’s legal system, declaring that poor knowledge of the law is destroying the country.

During his court appearance in Abuja, Kanu, who has been in DSS custody since his controversial rendition from Kenya in 2021, challenged the court’s jurisdiction, insisting that his trial lacks legal credibility.

“I am an educated man. I know the laws of Nigeria, and what is happening in this courtroom is a gross violation of those laws. Poor knowledge of the law is killing Nigeria!” Kanu declared in an explosive courtroom moment.

Legal Arguments and Courtroom Clash
Kanu, who took charge of his own defense during the trial, dismissed the authority of Justice Binta Nyako to preside over his case, citing her previous recusal in 2024.

“You cannot preside over this case—not today, not ever. This is not a court of law; this is a shrine of injustice!” Kanu told the judge, further accusing the judiciary of bias and complicity in undermining the rule of law.

His lawyers supported his position, arguing that his trial should not continue under a judge who had earlier stepped down. However, the prosecution insisted on proceeding, leading to yet another legal stalemate in Kanu’s terrorism trial.

Public Reaction and Legal Debate
Kanu’s fiery comments have ignited widespread debate about judicial integrity and the enforcement of laws in Nigeria. His supporters argue that the government is manipulating legal processes to silence opposition, while others believe his continued defiance could complicate his case further.
