Ugandan musician Bebe Cool has refuted allegations that he orchestrated the 2020 arrest of Nigerian artists Tems and Omah Lay in Kampala. The duo was detained in December 2020 for performing at a concert that allegedly violated Uganda’s COVID-19 regulations.
Following their release, Tems accused Bebe Cool of instigating their arrest. In a recent interview on the Afrobeats podcast, Bebe Cool clarified that he was unaware of the concert until after the arrests and that he actively worked to secure their release.
He emphasized that his prior criticisms were directed at the Ugandan government’s restrictions on local artists during the pandemic, not at the Nigerian performers.
