A horrific accident at Command Junction, Nnewi, Anambra State, has left six people dead, including three female children, after a trailer driver lost control and fled the scene.

Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mrs. Joyce Alexander, attributed the crash to speeding, brake failure, and loss of control.

The tragic crash, which occurred on Friday, February 14, 2025, involved a black commercial trailer with registration number UKP-540YP, a white Mercedes lorry (ATN-279ZK), and three motorcycles without registration numbers.

How the Crash Happened

Eyewitnesses reported that the cement-laden trailer was descending a hill at high speed when it suffered brake failure, veered off course, and rammed into the Mercedes lorry. The impact sent the trailer crashing into a roadside container shop, pushing it into a nearby building.

In total, ten people were involved in the crash:

Fatalities: 3 female children, 1 woman, and 2 men

Among the deceased, a man and a woman were trapped inside the collapsed building before being extricated by FRSC emergency responders and taken to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Akammili Umudim, Nnewi.

Driver on the Run, Investigations Begin

The trailer driver fled the scene immediately after the accident, leaving authorities scrambling to locate him. The FRSC has assured that investigations are underway to track down both the driver and the trailer owner.

Mrs. Alexander, who visited the crash site, met with the owner of the damaged building and assured him that updates on the investigation would be communicated. Meanwhile, FRSC operatives, in collaboration with the police, ensured the safe offloading of cement bags before a heavy-duty tow truck removed the wreckage.
