A devastating accident on Monday claimed the lives of six students of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) and their shuttle bus driver after a trailer lost control and rammed into the vehicle.
The tragic incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. when an articulated vehicle carrying wood and jerrycans of palm oil reportedly failed its brakes along the Abuja-Lokoja highway, crashing into the fully loaded FUL shuttle bus as it prepared to transport students to campus.
Eyewitnesses described the collision as catastrophic, with the force of the impact completely crushing the bus. Rescue operations by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) saw several victims pulled from the wreckage, while the bodies of the deceased were moved to the morgue for identification.
Kogi State Sector Commandant of the FRSC, Samuel Oyedeji, who led his team to the scene, confirmed that injured victims were rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, and Kogi State Specialist Hospital for urgent medical attention. However, he did not immediately confirm the exact number of casualties.
The accident has sparked fresh concerns over road safety and reckless driving by heavy-duty vehicle operators on major Nigerian highways, with students and residents calling on authorities to implement stricter measures to prevent further tragedies.
