Tensions have erupted in the Abia State Football Association (FA) following the impeachment of its Chairman, Obioma Onyeaghala, over allegations of abuse of office, financial recklessness, and insubordination to authorities. The impeachment was executed during an extraordinary Congress held in Umuahia, where members overwhelmingly voted for his removal.
The motion to impeach Onyeaghala was moved by Johnson Nwosu, Chairman of Abia Angels FC, and seconded by Onyeke Onyeukwu of Enyimba FC.Several FA members present at the meeting backed the decision, citing grievances over the chairman’s alleged high-handedness in managing football affairs in the state.
However, Onyeaghala has rejected the impeachment, branding it illegitimate. He insisted that only the FA Congress has the power to remove him, declaring, “Congress brought me in, and only Congress can remove me. My tenure runs until May 5, 2027, and I will stand for re-election.”
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has now intervened, setting up a three-man committee to resolve the crisis. In a letter signed by Ali Abubakar Muhammad, NFF’s Head of Member Associations and Special Duties, the apex football body directed all parties to suspend impeachment-related activities pending the committee’s findings.
Insiders at the Abia State Sports Council suggest that Onyeaghala’s strained relationship with club leaders and the Referees Association may have contributed to the upheaval. As the NFF steps in, all eyes will be on the committee’s verdict, which could reshape football administration in Abia State.
