Political tension has erupted in the Lagos State House of Assembly as former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, accompanied by a heavy security presence, forcefully reclaimed the Speaker’s office on Tuesday, February 27, 2025.
This marks Obasa’s first return to the Assembly complex since his controversial removal on January 13, 2025, while he was away in the United States during the House recess. His reappearance comes amid a deepening power struggle, with security forces withdrawing protection from the new Speaker, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda, earlier today.
Obasa, who has filed a lawsuit challenging his removal, is yet to have his case heard in court. Meanwhile, lawmakers remain divided over the unfolding chaos. At the last sitting on February 17, Assembly members fiercely condemned the presence of State Security Services (SSS) operatives, who blocked access to the Speaker’s office, the Deputy Speaker’s office, and the Clerk’s office, even attempting to prevent the plenary from holding.
Following that disruption, the Assembly adjourned indefinitely, leaving Lagos politics in a state of uncertainty. With today’s dramatic takeover, concerns are rising over the legitimacy of leadership in the House and the role of security agencies in the crisis.
All eyes are now on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and legal authorities to clarify the next steps as tensions escalate. More details will follow as the situation develops.
