The controversy surrounding Senator Natasha Akpoti’s sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio has deepened, with Senator Ireti Kingibe stating that Akpoti had a personal relationship with Akpabio before joining the Senate.
Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), made the revelation on Arise TV on Friday, February 28, 2025, while responding to Akpoti’s claims that Akpabio denied her privileges after she allegedly rejected his advances.
According to Kingibe, while Akpoti has openly accused Akpabio of misconduct, the other three female senators have remained silent, as they never had any prior connections with the Senate President before assuming office.
“This is about the rules of the Senate. Women have been moved several times. On that day, I wasn’t there, but I gathered that men were also moved. Whether there is sexual harassment between them? They already had a personal relationship before they came to the Senate,” Kingibe stated.
Akpoti’s allegations have sparked widespread debate, with Akpabio’s wife, Unoma, dismissing the claims, accusing Akpoti of fabricating the story for personal gain.
The situation has raised concerns about power dynamics within the Senate, with some calling for a formal investigation into Akpoti’s allegations, while others argue that the claims could be politically motivated.
As tensions rise, the issue of gender equality, political influence, and ethical conduct in Nigeria’s highest legislative chamber remains under scrutiny.
