A devastating tanker explosion rocked Ibadan, Oyo State, in the early hours of Tuesday, March 4, 2025, leaving two people dead and causing massive destruction in the Oluyole Local Government Area.
The explosion, which occurred around 5:00 am near Gabster Mega Petrol Station in Orita Challenge, engulfed the area in flames, trapping the tanker driver and his assistant, who were burnt beyond recognition.
Authorities swiftly responded to the emergency after receiving a distress call at 5:15 am. The Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform to Governor Seyi Makinde, Moroof Akinwande, confirmed the tragic incident.
“We received the distress call and immediately responded. The situation is now under control,” he stated.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and destruction, with several properties damaged and residents scrambling for safety. Firefighters battled the raging inferno for hours, preventing further spread to nearby buildings and fuel stations.
As investigations into the cause of the explosion commence, authorities have urged motorists and fuel transporters to adhere strictly to safety regulations to prevent future disasters.
