A massive explosion rocked the Otedola Bridge area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday night, leaving destruction in its wake as a 30-tonne gas tanker went up in flames after an accident.

The fire, which started around 7 PM, engulfed two buildings, including a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) property and a bungalow, as well as four vehicles. Multiple eyewitness videos shared on social media showed thick flames rising from the site, causing panic among motorists and commuters.

Confirming the incident, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, revealed that the tanker, which had no registration number, crashed while navigating the expressway, triggering a violent explosion.

“The resultant fire quickly spread to the church and adjoining bungalow as well as four different brands of vehicles. Firefighting operations are ongoing, and no casualties have been recorded so far,” Adeseye stated.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, provided an update confirming that the fire has been successfully contained and that traffic is flowing smoothly on the bridge.

“We can confirm that the fire, which has now been put out, did not occur on the bridge. Officers of the Lagos State Police Command are fully on the ground to secure the scene for other post-fire activities,” Hundeyin assured.
