Tragedy struck in Buju village, Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, as the police arrested a 20-year-old woman, Rukayya Ahmadu, for allegedly killing her co-wife, Asiyah Ahmadu, by pouring hot water on her during a heated dispute.
The altercation occurred on Monday, March 3, 2025, at approximately 6:30 p.m. According to the Jigawa State Police Command spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, officers received a distress report that Rukayya attacked Asiyah, leaving her with severe burns.
A police team swiftly responded, rushing the victim to Dutse General Hospital. Despite efforts to save her, doctors pronounced Asiyah dead on March 4, 2025, at around 9:00 a.m.
Following her arrest, Rukayya reportedly confessed to the crime and has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for further interrogation. Authorities have assured that a thorough investigation is underway, and the suspect will face prosecution.
The tragic incident has reignited discussions on domestic violence, marital disputes, and the struggles of polygamous households in northern Nigeria.
